Airport Transit Without a Visa: Countries Where You Can Leave the Airport Between Flights

kaysarkobir@gmail.com March 19, 2026 3 views

What Transit Without Visa Means

Transit without visa means you enter a country during a layover without a standard tourist visa. The rules differ by country and by your passport nationality.

Three categories exist:

Airside transit: You stay within the international zone of the airport. No immigration clearance. No country entry. Available in almost every country for almost every passport.

Landside transit (visa-free): You clear immigration, enter the country and leave the airport. No visa required for specific passport holders. This is the desirable option for city visits during layovers.

Landside transit (visa required): You need a specific transit visa to enter the country during your layover. Must be obtained before travel.

Countries With Visa-Free Landside Transit for Most Passports

Singapore: Best Transit Programme in the World

Singapore allows 96-hour visa-free transit for most passport holders. You clear immigration, take the MRT into the city and return before your next flight.

Eligibility: Most passport holders including UK, EU, USA, Australia, Japan, South Korea. Check the ICA website (ica.gov.sg) for your specific nationality.

Free transit programmes: Singapore also runs guided transit tours for passengers with long layovers:

  • Free city sightseeing tour (6-hour itinerary): Register at Jewel Changi Airport
  • Free heritage and cultural tours: Register at Terminal 3

What you need: Your onward flight boarding pass, a passport with at least 6 months validity, proof of onward travel.

Turkey: Free Transit Visa

Passengers transiting Istanbul with a minimum 6-hour layover who hold passports from certain countries (USA, UK, EU, Canada, Australia, Japan, South Korea and others) receive a free transit visa on arrival at the airport.

Coverage: Unlimited time in Istanbul up to the departure of your onward flight (maximum 24 hours).

Turkish Airlines free city tour: Turkish Airlines provides complimentary city tours for passengers transiting Istanbul with a TK connecting flight and a layover of 6 to 24 hours. Register at the Turkish Airlines desk in the arrivals area.

What you see in 6 hours: Sultanahmet district (Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia exterior, Grand Bazaar) is 30 minutes from the airport by metro. Entirely achievable on a 6-hour layover.

UAE: Dubai 96-Hour Transit Visa

UAE offers a free 96-hour transit visa for passengers transiting through Dubai International Airport (DXB) or Abu Dhabi (AUH).

Eligibility: Over 50 nationalities including UK, EU, USA, Australia, Japan, India (with restrictions), South Korea.

Apply: Online through airlines.emirates.com or at the Dubai airport on arrival.

What to see in 48 hours: Dubai Mall and Burj Khalifa observation deck, Dubai Marina, Jumeirah Beach, Gold Souk and Spice Souk, desert safari (book in advance if you have 2 nights).

Japan: Visa-Free Entry Up to 90 Days

Most Western passport holders (UK, EU, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand) enter Japan visa-free for up to 90 days. For transit purposes, this means any layover of any length allows you to enter Japan with no additional documentation.

Practical for: Tokyo Narita (NRT) and Haneda (HND) layovers. Train connections make central Tokyo accessible in 30 to 60 minutes from either airport.

South Korea: K-ETA Required

South Korea requires a K-ETA (Korea Electronic Travel Authorisation) for visa-free entry from many countries that previously received automatic visa-free access.

K-ETA: Apply online at k-eta.go.kr. Cost: $10. Processing: 72 hours typically. Valid 2 years from approval.

Transit time needed: Seoul city centre is 40 to 60 minutes from Incheon Airport by AREX express train. A 4-hour minimum layover allows a brief city visit; 6 hours is more comfortable.

Countries That Require a Transit Visa

India

India requires an airport transit visa for most passport holders who clear immigration during a layover. The exception: airside transit where you stay in the international zone does not require a visa.

For city visits during an Indian layover: A tourist e-visa ($25) is required. Apply at indianvisaonline.gov.in minimum 4 days before arrival.

China

China's transit without visa policy (TWOV) allows 72-hour or 144-hour visa-free stays for citizens of 53 countries transiting through specific airports including Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou.

Eligibility check: The policy applies only at designated airports and only when entering from one country and leaving to a different third country. Confirm your specific routing qualifies at the Chinese embassy website before relying on TWOV.

The Transit Layover Logistics

If you plan to leave the airport during a layover, apply this timeline:

  • Immigration clearance: Allow 20 to 45 minutes after landing
  • Transport to city: 30 to 90 minutes depending on destination
  • City visit time: Whatever remains
  • Transport back to airport: 30 to 90 minutes
  • Check-in for onward flight: Allow 90 minutes minimum for international flights; 60 minutes for domestic

Minimum layover for a meaningful city visit: 5 hours from landing to boarding. 6 to 8 hours is more comfortable.

Luggage: Check large bags through to your final destination if your journey is on a through-ticket. Carry a small daypack into the city. If on separate tickets, use the airport's left luggage facility before going through immigration.
