Bangladesh has one of the most extensive inter-city bus networks in South Asia. Thousands of buses operate daily across hundreds of routes — from the premium AC Scania or Volvo coaches serving major routes to non-AC local services connecting every district and upazila in the country.
The bus network is predominantly privately operated — unlike railways, there is no single national bus operator. Dozens of competing companies run each major route, with prices and quality varying significantly. Understanding the landscape helps you choose the right operator for your journey.
The most affordable option. Older coaches, open windows, no air conditioning. Adequate for short journeys (under 2 hours) and extremely budget-conscious travellers.
Air-conditioned coaches with reclining seats, significantly better comfort than non-AC. Multiple sub-tiers exist:
AC Economy: Standard AC with 3-across or 2+2 seating. Good value for routes under 6 hours.
AC Business/Chair Coach: Premium reclining seats, 2+2 layout, often with leg rests. The sweet spot for most travellers on 4–8 hour routes.
AC Sleeper: Fully reclining or near-flat seats/berths. Used on overnight routes (Dhaka–Khulna, Dhaka–Cox's Bazar). The most comfortable road option for overnight travel.
Volvo/Scania Coach: Top-tier services using European coach chassis (Volvo 9400, Scania) with premium interiors, individual entertainment, wider seats and better suspension. Premium priced.
