Every e-ticket you receive falls into one of four categories. Knowing which format you have tells you what to prepare before you arrive at the gate.
Format 1: Static PDF with barcode or QR code
A fixed PDF file. The code does not change. Print it or show it on your phone. No internet required to display.
Format 2: Dynamic QR code (app-based)
A QR code that refreshes every 30 to 90 seconds. Requires the operator's app and must be loaded on active data before the gate. Screenshots do not work because the code expires.
Format 3: Mobile wallet pass (Apple Wallet or Google Wallet)
A structured pass in your phone's native wallet. Updates automatically when the operator sends changes. Works offline once loaded. No app required to display.
Format 4: NFC (tap-to-enter)
Your phone or card communicates via near-field communication. No scan required; tap the reader. Used for transit cards and some venue wristbands.

Before any day involving ticket gates, complete these steps while you have reliable connectivity:
Battery management: Dynamic QR code apps (Ticketmaster, AXS, Disney) require your phone screen on at the gate. Keep battery above 30% before arriving at any high-volume gate. A power bank in your bag is a practical precaution for full-day events.
Gate rejection happens for four reasons: wrong date, wrong venue, duplicate scan (someone else used the code first) or a technical gate error.
First step: Confirm you are at the correct gate for your ticket type. Large venues have multiple entrances; premium tickets often use separate access points.
Second step: Show your booking confirmation email with the booking reference to the gate staff. They have a manual validation system for every legitimate ticket.
Third step: If staff cannot resolve it on-site, call the operator's customer service number immediately. Do not leave the venue area before the issue is documented.
