E-Ticket Formats Around the World: PDF, App, QR Code and What Each Gate Accepts

kaysarkobir@gmail.com March 19, 2026 4 views

The Four Main E-Ticket Formats

Every e-ticket you receive falls into one of four categories. Knowing which format you have tells you what to prepare before you arrive at the gate.

Format 1: Static PDF with barcode or QR code

A fixed PDF file. The code does not change. Print it or show it on your phone. No internet required to display.

Format 2: Dynamic QR code (app-based)

A QR code that refreshes every 30 to 90 seconds. Requires the operator's app and must be loaded on active data before the gate. Screenshots do not work because the code expires.

Format 3: Mobile wallet pass (Apple Wallet or Google Wallet)

A structured pass in your phone's native wallet. Updates automatically when the operator sends changes. Works offline once loaded. No app required to display.

Format 4: NFC (tap-to-enter)

Your phone or card communicates via near-field communication. No scan required; tap the reader. Used for transit cards and some venue wristbands.

Who Uses Which Format

Airlines

Full-service carriers (British Airways, Emirates, Lufthansa, Singapore Airlines):

  • Boarding passes available as PDF, Apple Wallet pass or Google Wallet pass
  • Apple Wallet pass is preferred: works offline, updates with gate changes automatically
  • Check in via the airline app 24 to 48 hours before departure to generate the boarding pass

US budget carriers (Spirit, Frontier, Southwest):

  • Boarding passes via airline app; dynamic QR code on most
  • Southwest: PDF and app QR both accepted
  • Screenshot of dynamic QR code may not work at gates with real-time validation; use the app directly

Theme Parks and Attractions

Disney World and Disneyland (USA and Paris):

  • All tickets stored in the My Disney Experience or Disneyland Paris app
  • QR codes are dynamic; must be shown from the app
  • Screenshot does not work at any Disney park gate globally
  • Download the app and log into your account before arriving; no gate signal is guaranteed

Universal Studios (USA):

  • PDF or Universal app
  • PDF accepted at all Universal gates; screenshot of PDF fine
  • Express Pass is stored in the app with dynamic QR; do not screenshot

London attractions (Tower of London, Kew Gardens, Hampton Court):

  • Historic Royal Palaces uses standard PDF tickets via email
  • Screenshot or printout works fine at all HRP venue gates

Singapore attractions (Night Safari, Singapore Zoo, River Wonders):

  • Mandai tickets sent as PDF via email
  • Show PDF on screen; no app required; screenshots work

Concert and Event Venues

Ticketmaster (global):

  • Tickets stored in Ticketmaster app with rotating barcode (dynamic format)
  • Do not screenshot; the rotating barcode changes every few seconds
  • Download tickets in the app before losing signal near busy venue

AXS (global):

  • AXS app with rotating barcode
  • Same rule: use the app, do not screenshot

DICE (UK and Europe):

  • DICE app with non-transferable QR code
  • Codes are identity-locked; the QR code alone without your DICE account is invalid

See Tickets (UK festivals):

  • Glastonbury: photo-ID-matched barcode in email PDF; screenshot works; staff verify against photo at entry

The Offline Preparation Checklist

Before any day involving ticket gates, complete these steps while you have reliable connectivity:

  1. Open each ticketing app and navigate to your ticket. This loads the ticket data into the app's local cache.
  2. Download any PDF tickets to Files (iOS) or Downloads (Android) as locally stored files.
  3. Add any wallet passes to Apple Wallet or Google Wallet.
  4. Screenshot your booking reference number and the operator's customer service phone number. If the app fails, staff can validate manually using your reference.

Battery management: Dynamic QR code apps (Ticketmaster, AXS, Disney) require your phone screen on at the gate. Keep battery above 30% before arriving at any high-volume gate. A power bank in your bag is a practical precaution for full-day events.

When the Gate Rejects Your Ticket

Gate rejection happens for four reasons: wrong date, wrong venue, duplicate scan (someone else used the code first) or a technical gate error.

First step: Confirm you are at the correct gate for your ticket type. Large venues have multiple entrances; premium tickets often use separate access points.

Second step: Show your booking confirmation email with the booking reference to the gate staff. They have a manual validation system for every legitimate ticket.

Third step: If staff cannot resolve it on-site, call the operator's customer service number immediately. Do not leave the venue area before the issue is documented.
