Heathrow Airport to Central London: Every Transport Option, Cost and Journey Time

The Five Ways to Get From Heathrow to London

Heathrow serves 80 million passengers annually and has five main transport links to central London. The difference between the cheapest and most expensive option on an identical route is over £70. Knowing which option suits your journey saves money on every visit.

Option 1: Elizabeth Line (Crossrail)

The Elizabeth Line is the best option for most travellers. It runs through all four Heathrow terminals and connects directly to Paddington, Bond Street, Tottenham Court Road, Farringdon, Liverpool Street and Canary Wharf without changing.

Journey time: 26 minutes to Paddington, 48 minutes to Liverpool Street

Price: £12.70 single using Oyster or contactless bank card. No surcharge. The daily cap applies.

Frequency: Every 10 minutes throughout the day

Operating hours: 05:10 to 00:04 Monday to Saturday; 06:05 to 23:34 Sunday

Where to board: Follow "Elizabeth Line" signs from the baggage reclaim area in all terminals. Terminals 2 and 3 share a station. Terminal 4 and Terminal 5 each have their own stations.

Luggage: Large trolley bags fit in the dedicated luggage areas at each end of the carriage. The train is not crowded enough during off-peak hours to cause problems with bags. During morning and evening peak hours (07:00 to 09:30 and 17:00 to 19:30), the train fills significantly and large bags become awkward.

Option 2: Heathrow Express

The Heathrow Express is faster than the Elizabeth Line but significantly more expensive for a shorter journey.

Journey time: 15 minutes non-stop to Paddington only

Price: £25 single booked online in advance; £37 at the station; £50 standard return

Frequency: Every 15 minutes

Operating hours: 05:12 to 23:48 from Heathrow

When to choose Heathrow Express:

  • You are connecting directly to a Great Western Railway train from Paddington (Bath, Bristol, Oxford, Cardiff)
  • Every minute matters and the 11-minute saving over the Elizabeth Line is worth £12.30 to you
  • Your organisation pays for business travel and the faster option is within policy

Book in advance at: heathrowexpress.com for the £25 fare. Buying at the station always costs £37.

Option 3: National Express Coach

The National Express coach from Heathrow connects to London Victoria Coach Station and makes stops across west and central London.

Journey time: 45 to 75 minutes depending on traffic

Price: £8 to £12 single booked in advance; £17 at the airport

Frequency: Every 30 minutes

Book at: nationalexpress.com. Book before you travel for the cheapest fares.

Best for: Budget travellers with no time pressure who are headed to Victoria, Earl's Court, Cromwell Road or other stops along the route. Not suitable if you have a tight connection or need a fixed arrival time.

Option 4: London Underground (Piccadilly Line)

The Piccadilly line runs from Heathrow to central London with stops throughout zones 1 to 6. It is the only Underground line serving Heathrow.

Journey time: 45 to 60 minutes to central London depending on destination

Price: £5.50 (peak) or £3.50 (off-peak) with Oyster or contactless

Frequency: Every 4 to 9 minutes

Key stops: Gloucester Road, South Kensington, Knightsbridge, Hyde Park Corner, Green Park, Piccadilly Circus, Leicester Square, Covent Garden, Holborn, King's Cross

Best for: Travellers heading to west central London (South Kensington, Knightsbridge, Earls Court area) where the Piccadilly line is more direct than switching from the Elizabeth Line. Also good for travelling late at night when the Elizabeth Line frequency drops.

Luggage note: The Piccadilly line uses older narrow-bodied trains. Large suitcases do not fit easily in the carriage. This is the biggest practical disadvantage versus the Elizabeth Line.

Option 5: Taxi and Private Hire

Black cab (metered): No booking required. Join the licensed taxi queue outside arrivals. Metered fare to central London: £50 to £85 depending on destination and traffic.

Uber/private hire: Book via the Uber or Bolt app after landing. Cheaper than black cabs on most routes. Designated pick-up areas are signposted from arrivals. Price: £35 to £60 to central London depending on surging.

Pre-booked private transfer: Fixed price, no traffic surcharges. Companies include Addison Lee, Wheely and airport transfer specialists. Prices from £55 to £90. Best for early morning or late night arrivals when surging affects app-based services.
