What Costs Money Within the Parks

The Serpentine Gallery (Hyde Park)

The Serpentine Galleries (Serpentine Gallery and Serpentine North) are free during regular opening hours.

  • Opening hours: Tuesday to Sunday, 10am to 6pm
  • Annual Serpentine Summer Pavilion: Free. A new temporary architectural pavilion is commissioned every summer. No ticket required.
  • Some special exhibition previews charge for entry; the regular programme is always free.

The Boating Lake (Hyde Park and Regent's Park)

Open-Air Theatre in Regent's Park

The Open Air Theatre in Regent's Park is one of London's most atmospheric performance venues. It seats 1,240 people on a summer evening under open sky.

  • Productions: West End-quality musicals, Shakespeare and family shows
  • Price range: £25 to £82 depending on seat zone and production
  • Book at: openairtheatre.com; the most popular shows (major musicals) sell out 4 to 8 weeks ahead in July and August

The Proms at Hyde Park

The BBC Proms Last Night in Hyde Park (September) draws 40,000 people for a free outdoor screening of the Royal Albert Hall Last Night of the Proms.

  • Cost: Free to enter Hyde Park on the night; no ticket required
  • Arrive: 3 to 4 hours before the 7pm start for a central position on the grass

Hyde Park Winter Wonderland

Winter Wonderland transforms Hyde Park into a large fairground, ice rink and Christmas market from mid-November to early January.

Greenwich Park: The Royal Observatory

The park is free. The Royal Observatory within it charges entry.

  • What it includes: Flamsteed House, historic telescopes, the meridian line (you stand on the zero line of longitude)

  • Free element: The famous view across Greenwich and the Thames from the park hillside is always free and does not require Observatory entry

Richmond Park: No Entry Fee, No Booking

Richmond Park is free and open 365 days a year. No permit, no ticket, no booking.

The 630 wild red deer and 350 fallow deer roam freely. The best viewing period is the autumn rut (October to November) when stags are most visible.

Parking: Car parks inside the park charge £2 to £3 per hour. Free cycling routes cross the park. Bus routes 371 and 65 run to the park boundaries.
