A significant number of travellers in Bangladesh pay full price for transport and attractions when they are legally entitled to discounts. The reasons are simple: the discount schemes are not prominently advertised, the process for claiming them is not obvious, and many travellers simply do not ask.
This guide maps every legitimate discount available to students, groups, senior citizens and other eligible categories — and tells you exactly how to claim each one.
Bangladesh Railway offers legally mandated concession fares for specific categories:
Students enrolled in recognised educational institutions in Bangladesh are entitled to 50% discount on Bangladesh Railway fares (excluding premium classes on some services).
Eligibility: Students of secondary school, college and university level with a valid student ID from a recognised institution.
How to claim:
Liberation War freedom fighters and their direct dependants receive 100% concession (free travel) on Bangladesh Railway. Requires official freedom fighter certificate from the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs.
Passengers with certified physical disabilities receive 50% discount. Requires government-issued disability certificate. Apply at station counters.
Groups of 20 or more passengers booking together on the same service may qualify for a group discount rate. This must be arranged directly with Bangladesh Railway's commercial division — contact the divisional railway office for the originating station at least 7 days before travel.
Unlike railways, private bus operators are not legally required to offer student discounts and most do not have formal student concession programmes. However:
Groups of 15+ passengers can often negotiate group rates directly with bus operators for charter or block-booking arrangements.
How to arrange:
Best for: Corporate staff travel, educational institution field trips, pilgrimage groups, wedding party transport.
Every government-operated tourist site in Bangladesh charges a different — significantly lower — entry fee for Bangladeshi nationals vs foreign nationals. As a Bangladeshi citizen, always present your NID to confirm nationality at any site where you are unsure of your fee category.
Citizens of SAARC member countries (India, Pakistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Maldives, Afghanistan) pay an intermediate rate at most government attractions — higher than Bangladeshi national rates but lower than rates for citizens of other foreign countries.
The Dhaka Museum (National Museum), Liberation War Museum and several archaeological sites offer reduced entry for students with valid student ID:
Always carry your student ID and ask specifically for the student rate at the counter — it is not always displayed prominently.
Fantasy Kingdom and Nandan Park both offer group packages for school trips, corporate outings and organised groups:
Biman Bangladesh Airlines periodically runs youth fare promotions for passengers under 26. These are not permanently available — check the Biman website's promotional fares section or sign up for their newsletter.
International airlines: Several carriers serving Dhaka offer published youth fares for passengers 12–25 (or similar age ranges depending on airline). Qatar Airways, Emirates and Turkish Airlines all have youth fare categories on some routes. These are not always shown in standard search results — call the airline's Bangladesh office directly and ask specifically about youth fares for your route.
