Why World Heritage Sites Often Require Advance Planning
UNESCO World Heritage designation creates a paradox: the recognition that makes a site famous also drives visitor numbers that threaten the very qualities that warranted protection. In response, more Heritage Sites are implementing timed entry systems, daily visitor caps and mandatory permit systems with every passing year.
The sites that sell out furthest in advance are consistently the same ones: Machu Picchu, the Inca Trail, Petra, Angkor Wat, the Galápagos Islands and a handful of others. Showing up without a reservation at these sites frequently means being turned away.
The Americas: Top Heritage Sites and Their Tickets
Machu Picchu (Peru) — The Most Organised Ticketing System
Machu Picchu's entry system was completely overhauled in 2023 and is now one of the world's most sophisticated heritage site management systems.
Circuit options:

| Circuit 1 | Classic route, central structures | $20–$45 |
| Circuit 2 | Lower agricultural terraces | $20–$45 |
| Circuit 3 | Inti Punku (Sun Gate) + agricultural zone | $20–$45 |
| Circuit 4 | Llaqtapata ruins (added panoramic viewpoint) | $30–$55 |
| Huayna Picchu mountain | Steep hike with iconic aerial view | $65 |
| Machu Picchu mountain | Longer hike to highest point | $65 |
Entry times: Morning (6am–7am), Mid-Morning (7am–8am), and so on in 1-hour increments. You must enter within your timed window.
Book at: machupicchu.gob.pe — the only official source. Third-party operators (travel agencies) can book on your behalf but use this same system.
How far ahead to book: Huayna Picchu mountain tickets (limited to 400/day) sell out months ahead in peak season (June–August). General site tickets sell out 2–4 weeks ahead in peak months. Off-season (November–April except late December) has better availability.

Stonehenge operates a timed entry system year-round — walk-up admission is not available.

Dubrovnik Old Town (Croatia) — Managing Overtourism
Dubrovnik's historic city walls saw visitor numbers restricted after years of cruise ship overcrowding.
- City walls ticket: HRK 200 ($27) for the walls circuit

- No permit required for general entry to the old town — just the walls circuit
Alhambra (Granada, Spain) — Books Out Weeks Ahead
The Alhambra consistently ranks among Spain's most-visited and most frequently sold-out attractions.
- Entry fee: €19–€22 depending on time slot (day vs evening Nasrid Palaces visit)
- Book at: alhambra-patronato.es — books out 2–6 weeks ahead in peak season

- Best value: 3-day pass for most visitors — Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom, Ta Prohm and Banteay Srei each deserve a half-day minimum

| Mutianyu | 70km | Largely restored | High |
| Jinshanling | 130km | Partially restored | Moderate |
| Jiankou | 90km | Wild/unrestored | Low |
Entry fees: CNY 45–65 (Badaling); CNY 65 (Mutianyu); CNY 65 (Jinshanling)

Africa: Heritage Safari and Natural Sites
Serengeti National Park (Tanzania) — Pay Per Day
- Entry fee: $70 per adult per day
- How to visit: Must be on an organised safari; independent driving is technically possible with a 4WD but not recommended without local knowledge
- Peak season (July–October): The Great Migration — wildebeest river crossings; accommodation books 6–12 months ahead; prices at peak
- Shoulder season (January–March): Green season; calving season on the southern Serengeti; fewer visitors; better prices
Pyramids of Giza (Egypt)
- Giza Plateau entry: EGP 200 ($6.50)
- Great Pyramid interior: EGP 400 ($13) additional; limited capacity — buy at site on the day
- Solar Boat Museum: EGP 100 additional
- Night Sound and Light Show: EGP 200 per person; booking via egyptptoursportal.com recommended in peak season
- Important: Say no firmly to unsolicited "guides" who approach at the entrance — the plateau is navigable independently
Practical Universal Tips for Heritage Sites
- Check the official heritage site website — not tourism aggregator sites — for the current entry system; systems change frequently
- Book 4–12 weeks ahead for peak season at the most popular sites (Machu Picchu, Alhambra, Angkor Wat in December–January)
- Off-peak is often transformative: The Alhambra without summer crowds, Angkor Wat in September after the Chinese group tour season — the experience changes completely
- Hire the official guide where available — the interpretive context at a site like Pompeii, Angkor or the Pyramids makes an enormous difference to the experience, and official guides are vetted and licensed
- Two-day over one-day at major archaeological sites — rushing Machu Picchu or Angkor Wat in half a day is a missed opportunity; the second visit reveals things the first one missed
